Inventing an industry – Grit, determination and the birth of an Iconic brand

Shri Prakash Chand Jain brought to life an entire industry, when he first conceived of a new product altogether, the pan masala. A connoisseur of an age-old Indian tradition, the pan, he often wondered how he could make the enjoyment of the pan even greater while taking away its inconveniences. And thus was born the idea of a mixing an exquisite and first-time ever combination of ingredients to create the pan masala. He named his beloved new product Pan Bahar, with the Hindi word ‘Bahar’ which means untold Joy.

Shri Parkash Chand Jain traveled around the country to procure the finest ingredients, from high quality supari, the purest kattha and handpicked elaichi seeds, to sandalwood oil, kewra and exquisite attars. He conceived a process of combining them to develop the first ever pan masala in 1966. It was a difficult process, and he was overjoyed with the results. However, the journey was not destined to be so easy. To his surprise and despair, every trader and local shop said no to even stocking this revolutionary new product.

A lesser man would have been heartbroken and disillusioned, but for Prakash Chand Jain it only added more determination to his quest. He decided to stand in front of shops and give away free samples of Pan Bahar to prospective customers. It was a tough and grueling decision, but it was the turning point of the story. Suddenly, thousands upon thousands woke up to the incredible experience of having Pan Bahar.

There was no looking back after this, and within a few years, Pan Bahar became a household name. Today it is a cult brand that is patronised by everyone, from the highest echelons of society to die-hard connoisseurs of pan. The Pan Bahar brand has been endorsed on national television by equally iconic Bollywood stars, the Late Feroze Khan and his son Fardeen Khan, and, Mr. Zayed Khan, Mr. Akbar Khan, its communication and taste has been the choice of the nation ever since.
